Reading and Düsseldorf 70 years of friendship

On a beautiful sunny afternoon the Barberettes arrived in Reading to entertain guests at a Civic ceremony at the Town Hall. The ceremony was to reaffirm 70 years of friendship between Reading and Düsseldorf  (started in 1947 by the then Mayor of Reading Phoebe Cusden). Many of us travelled to Reading Town centre by train and were very noticeable walking around in our matching dresses and feeling somewhat self-conscious as people looked at this excited, chatty group walk by - probably wondering who this crazy bunch of ladies were.

The event itself was very formal but interesting, with dignitaries from Reading and Düsseldorf - members of the Reading Düsseldorf Association, Reading and Düsseldorf Churches interchange and representatives of groups in Reading who carry out twining exchanges alongside other guests who had travelled from Düsseldorf.

The Re-affirmation ceremony consisted of speeches made by the leader of Reading Council, the Mayor of Reading, The Oberbürgermeister of Düsseldorf, and the Chairman of the Reading Düsseldorf Association. The Re-affirmation Charter was read and presentations of gifts were also made between the representatives to celebrate the occasion.

We were then thrilled by a brilliant performance by the wind octet consisting of members of the Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra before we walked up to the stage to perform our varied and entertaining set. Starting with a four part acapella arrangement of Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ to our dynamic finale of ‘It’s Raining Men’ during which we had smiles from the audience and those standing at the back moving to the actions along with us.

We stayed for a champagne and cake reception and received complements from many of the guests who really enjoyed our performance and took time to chat to us.

We had a really enjoyable time and felt proud to have been a part of an historical event in the life of the Reading Düsseldorf friendship again.

Winners of Let’s Sing Reading 2017

What a week!

On Wednesday 1st March we won the Reading Let’s Sing Community Choir award for the 2nd year running.

Held at the Hexagon in Reading, we competed along with 12 other local choirs and opened the event with our rousing rendition of Aquarius.

We then had an agonising wait before we were told that we’d made it through to the final sing-off between two senior choirs. For this we sang our new arrangement of the Bee Gee’s classic “How Deep is Your Love”.

The judges appreciated how much control is required to perform this tricky ballad (40 years old today) and the Mayor of Reading announced that we had WON!

And not just that……..

Ady Williams (Reading Football Club and BBC Radio Berkshire Sports presenter) who was the Compere for Let’s Sing Reading, recommended that Berkshire Radio ask us to sing and share our experiences of this amazing evening.

So on Friday 3rd March 10 of us literally filled the studio at Radio Berkshire and sang our winning package and shared our experiences with the lovely Andrew Peach and our new Barberettes favourite mascot, Ady Williams.

What a great experience – thanks for the positive welcome Andrew and Ady, and for taking such an interest in the pastime that we all love.

We had talked on the Andrew Peach show about how most of our ladies don’t read music and learn from teach CDs. All you need to be a Barberette is enthusiasm and to be able to hold your part. So if you’d like to have a go at 4 part acapella singing with a great bunch of friendly ladies, why not come along on a Wednesday evening and have a go.
