The Barberettes are an award winning, accomplished group of singers who sing in four part a cappella harmony and Barbershop styles. We are entertaining, with a wide repertoire of popular and seasonal songs. We have performed at all kinds of events, from Christmas dinners and craft fairs to weddings and retirement parties - contact us and let us know your requirements and we can arrange a programme to suit you.

Open evening success

On Wednesday 3rd May we had a well attended open evening. The ladies who took part had the opportunity to be entertained by us, join us for some fun warm ups and also have a go at singing in four-part a cappella harmony. They also found out that it is also a lot of fun to be a Barberette and alongside the hard work, it is possible to enjoy some laughter together.

If you missed our open evening and would still like to come along and see if we are a good fit for your singing aspirations, check out our about us page by clicking on the tab above. You can contact us using the details on this site or send a messge via our Facebook page - or if you are free on Wednesday evenings, simply come along at 7:45pm, see what we're all about and chat to members in the break. It is not essential to be able to read music, but you should be able to carry a tune!

We welcome ladies over 16.

Winners of Let’s Sing Reading 2017

What a week!

On Wednesday 1st March we won the Reading Let’s Sing Community Choir award for the 2nd year running.

Held at the Hexagon in Reading, we competed along with 12 other local choirs and opened the event with our rousing rendition of Aquarius.

We then had an agonising wait before we were told that we’d made it through to the final sing-off between two senior choirs. For this we sang our new arrangement of the Bee Gee’s classic “How Deep is Your Love”.

The judges appreciated how much control is required to perform this tricky ballad (40 years old today) and the Mayor of Reading announced that we had WON!

And not just that……..

Ady Williams (Reading Football Club and BBC Radio Berkshire Sports presenter) who was the Compere for Let’s Sing Reading, recommended that Berkshire Radio ask us to sing and share our experiences of this amazing evening.

So on Friday 3rd March 10 of us literally filled the studio at Radio Berkshire and sang our winning package and shared our experiences with the lovely Andrew Peach and our new Barberettes favourite mascot, Ady Williams.

What a great experience – thanks for the positive welcome Andrew and Ady, and for taking such an interest in the pastime that we all love.

Have a listen to the interview and our songs you can hear us at around 2 hours 11 minutes in.

We had talked on the Andrew Peach show about how most of our ladies don’t read music and learn from teach CDs. All you need to be a Barberette is enthusiasm and to be able to hold your part. So if you’d like to have a go at 4 part acapella singing with a great bunch of friendly ladies, why not come along on a Wednesday evening and have a go. What an amazing, fantastic, fun and busy 2016 we had!

In March we were excited and very proud to win The Reading Choir of The Year competition at The Hexagon.

Some of us went to Harmony College in Nottingham and came away glad that we did because we learnt so much as well as having had a fantastic time! We visited Harmony Inspires in Oxford to collect the LABBS anniversary scroll, eat cake and sing together. Then we were visited by Arun Sounds who came to us to receive the scroll, sing together and share tea and cake!

The whole choir took part in making a promotional video for a film called Raymond's 5

We sang at Waterfest in Reading and Sunny Saturdays in Wokingham during the summer and in a charity concert in Twyford as guests of Reading Accordion Group.

In July we were joined by many former members to celebrate the 40th birthday of our wonderful chorus with a party complete with a hog roast and of course we ate cake again!

In October we put on our own 40th anniversary concert in Bracknell, This was well attended with lots of great feedback.

We also celebrated with the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) 40th anniversary at convention in Harrogate.

We ended the year with singing at the Reading Lions Fireworks display and Christmas season sing outs were sung at various venues. Whew...what a year!
